What are the Types of Activated Carbon?

If you are searching for the types of the activated carbon then you are at the right place. Here in this blog post, you will get the answer to your question: What are the types of activated carbon?. Activated carbon can be classified based on its source material and the processing techniques used to produce activated carbon.

What is activated carbon made from?

Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal can be made from different substances that contain a high carbon content such as coal, coconut shells, and wood. The raw material plays an important role that influences the characteristics and performance of the activated carbon.

Most common types of activated carbon

Different manufacturers produce different types of activated carbon, but here we are going to mention the most common types below: Let’s get into this.

  • Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) — The particles of granular activated carbon are large in size, but have a smaller external surface area when compared to other types of activated carbon. GAC particles are well capable of adsorbing vapors and gasses because they disperse quickly, and are therefore often used extensively in water treatment.

  • Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) — The particles of powdered activated carbon are made using ground or crushed carbon. Normally, powdered activated carbon particles are added directly to other process units, such as rapid mix basins, raw water intakes, and clarifiers. Mostly these particles are a good choice for carbon block filters.

  • Extruded Activated Carbon (EAC) — Extruded activated carbon is made by mixing pulverized anthracite or charcoal with a suitable binding agent. It is then extruded under high pressure to form a cylindrical or spherical shape. Due to the properties like the low-pressure drop, low dust content, and good mechanical strength, Extruded activated carbon is mainly used in gas phase applications. EAC is used in CTO filters to reduce chlorine, taste, and odor.

  • Impregnated Carbon — Impregnated Carbon - These types of porous carbon particles are composed of a variety of inorganic impregnated compounds such as silver and iodine. Impregnated activated carbon is often used as an adsorbent in the process of water purification because it can inhibit the growth of microbes.

  • Bead Activated Carbon (BAC) — To produce bead activated carbon petroleum pitch is used. BAC also has the properties of low dust content and mechanical strength like EAC. Due to Its circular shape, it is an ideal choice for applications such as water treatment.

  • Woven Carbon — Activated carbon can be woven into rayon to create carbon cloth with activated carbon. Carbon filtering properties of woven carbon allow it to be used in various applications such as odor absorption and defense.

  • Polymer Activated Carbon — A biocompatible polymer is coated on the porous carbon particles in polymer activated carbon. By using this process, carbon is given a smooth, permeable outer shell that does not constrict its pores. Hemoperfusion, a type of medical treatment, uses polymer activated carbon extensively.

So above mentioned are the most common types of activated carbon. Activated carbon filters out impurities and contaminants through the chemical process of adsorption in water filtration. Swift Green Filters manufactures water filters using the advanced activated carbon technique. You can explore a wide range of water filters including refrigerator water filters, under sink water filters, pitcher water filters, and carbon block filters. You should give it a try to use activated carbon water filters.
